Consultation Document on the Implementation of the Batteries and Accumulators and Waste Batteries and Accumulators Directive (2006/66/EC)

Consultation published by The Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform View original »

This consultation seeks views on options for implementing the requirements of Directive 2006/66/EC on Batteries and Accumulators and Waste Batteries and Accumulators in the UK.

The Government and the Devolved Administrations are seeking the views of producers, distributors, collectors and recyclers of batteries and accumulators and items containing batteries and accumulators, and any other interested parties, on possible approaches for implementing provisions in the Directive relating to the production and sale of new batteries and accumulators, and the collection, treatment, recycling and disposal of waste batteries and accumulators. At this stage, we are not consulting on draft Regulations. Responses to this consultation on options for implementation will inform Government decisions on the content of legislation to transpose the Directive into national law. There will be further public consultation on draft Regulations in due course.

The Consultation Document is written as if the same approaches to implementation will be taken across the UK, but it will be for the Devolved Administrations to decide whether they wish to introduce their own legislation to transpose the environmental provisions in the Directive.
